On Monday, InMobi announced its strategic partnership with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to introduce real-time weather alerts on Glance lock screen via the 1Weather app, catering to over 235 million Glance users in the country.
In the Letter of Agreement (LoA) between IMD and InMobi, the company emphasised that the partnership enables users to receive critical weather updates via the Glance lock screen app without unlocking their smartphones.
Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of IMD, said, “IMD is continuously enhancing its capabilities to improve weather and climate services. As we celebrate our 150-year milestone, we are further committed to innovating to build a better climate future for India. Through the use of smart AI and strategic partnerships such as InMobi and 1Weather, we are optimistic about achieving newer and quicker ways of sharing life-saving weather alerts.”
Powered by advanced numerical weather prediction models that analyze and forecast weather conditions, the updated Glance lock screen app can provide predictions related to cyclones, low-pressure systems, and depressions 3 to 5 days in advance. These hyper-local alerts also serve as timely warnings for short-duration events such as heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, hailstorms, and dusty winds.
This innovation eliminates the need to download multiple apps to access live weather alerts and plays a crucial role in public safety, disaster preparedness, and community well-being.
Currently available for Android smartphones, the Glance lock screen app delivers timely alerts to users in the event of natural calamities. The newly updated weather alerts will soon be integrated into the Glance lock screen and will also extend to the 1Weather app in the coming days.
