Apple makes some of the best smartphones, but for years, the tech giant has limited high-refresh-rate screens to the “Pro” models. However, a new leak suggests that the Cupertino-based tech giant may be planning to change that with the iPhone 17.
The news comes from the well-known Weibo-based Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station, who claims that Apple is planning to bring the high-refresh-rate “ProMotion” display to the vanilla iPhone 17.
While the tipster did not specify the exact refresh rate, it looks like Apple might be considering using LTPO panels for all iPhone 17 series models. To give you a quick recap, the non-Pro models in the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 16 series use LTPS panels, which have a maximum refresh rate of just 60Hz.
A few months ago, known Apple analyst Ross Young also said that the iPhone 17 and the much anticipated iPhone 17 Air will feature ProMotion OLED screens. Apart from a high refresh rate, LTPO panels also bring support for always-on display, which allows users to quickly check for things like notifications, time and widgets.
Rumour also has it that the entire iPhone 17 series will have an anti-reflective display, which could be more scratch-resistant than the Ceramic Shield Apple is using on the current iPhone models. As it turns out, Apple may also be planning to ditch the iPhone 17 Plus and introduce the iPhone 17 “Slim” or “Air”, which will be an entirely new model.
