Apple supercharges Voice Memos with AI-powered layer recording support on iPhone 16 Pro series | Technology News

It’s much easier to compose a song rather than record it. Recording usually requires quiet studio rooms with professional microphones to ensure only intended sound is recorded. Apple has a solution to this problem. Voice artists can now record layered audio on the iPhone 16 Pro series using the Voice Memos app, even without headphones.

Voice Memos has been a go-to app for musicians of all kinds, and with the iOS 18.2 update on the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the company is further enhancing this experience. Using the layered audio recording, users can play their instrumental ideas through the iPhone speaker and also record the vocals simultaneously. The same iOS 18.2 update is also introducing more Apple Intelligence to eligible iPhones, including ChaGPT integration, image playground, and more.

According to Apple, “This new capability is powered by the new studio-quality microphones on iPhone 16 Pro (review) and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Powered by the A18 Pro chip, and leveraging advanced processing and machine learning to isolate the vocal recording, Voice Memos creates two individual tracks so users can apply additional mixing and production in professional apps like Logic Pro.”

Apple also shared that Maybe, This Christmas song by Michael Bublé and Carly Pearce was recorded using the Voice Memos app.

Not just for musicians, this is also a great tool for podcasters and content creators. They can create a brand new track or a podcast from almost anywhere without worrying about external disturbances.

These recordings can then be further mixed on apps like Logic Pro on a Mac. Users can also send instrumental music mixes from Logic Pro in a compressed audio file directly to Voice Memos, and easily record vocals on top of that.

Due to hardware limitations, this feature is only available on the iPhone 16 Pro series powered by the A18 Pro, and not even on the base iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Plus with the A18 chip.
