On Wednesday, Corning unveiled Gorilla Glass Ceramic, emphasising drop protection. According to the leading smartphone glass maker, the latest ceramic glass offers improved drop performance even on rough surfaces like asphalt. Corning claims that Gorilla Glass Ceramic can survive up to 10 repeated drops from a one-meter height onto an asphalt surface, whereas an alternative aluminosilicate glass fails on the first drop.
“Gorilla Glass has built a reputation for strength and resilience, and our new glass-ceramic material continues this tradition. Designed to offer enhanced toughness, Gorilla Glass Ceramic reinforces our commitment to innovating and engineering high-quality, durable materials for display covers and enclosures,” said David Velasquez, Vice President & General Manager, Corning Gorilla Glass.
Corning has also confirmed that an upcoming Motorola smartphone will be the first to feature Gorilla Glass Ceramic, which will be available in the coming months.
Other features of Gorilla Glass Ceramic include high resistance to sharp contact damage and high retained strength. It is said to be ideal for products like smartphones, cameras, smartwatches, and wearables.
Corning is a pioneer in the smartphone glass protection business, manufacturing toughened glass for budget, mid-range, and high-end smartphones. The Gorilla Glass Armor 2 is the company’s latest flagship offering, available on the Galaxy S25 Ultra (review), providing exceptional strength against accidental damage, enhanced scratch resistance, and a special coating that significantly reduces reflections, adding anti-reflective capabilities to the device.
The company also offers solutions like Gorilla Glass 7i for mid-range devices, while budget smartphones often feature older yet affordable alternatives such as Gorilla Glass 3 or Gorilla Glass 5.
