Google continues to roll out new theft protection features to Android smartphones. In its latest effort, the company has introduced “Identity Check,” a new, biometric-based authentication feature designed to protect the privacy and data of smartphone owners in case of theft.
“A stolen device in the wrong hands can expose sensitive data, leaving you vulnerable to identity theft, financial fraud, and privacy breaches,” said Google in a blog post.
Currently rolling out to Pixel smartphones and Samsung Galaxy devices running Android 15, this feature, when enabled, will prevent thieves from accessing digital accounts on the smartphone, even if it is unlocked or the password is compromised. Users will need to complete biometric authentication to access certain accounts and device settings, especially when the device is outside trusted locations. Users can add several trusted places, such as home or office addresses.
Note that this feature will only be available on smartphones with Class 3 Biometrics, formerly known as “strong biometrics”. These devices fall back to primary authentication, such as a PIN, passcode, or pattern, only after 72 hours. They also feature a lower rate of false acceptance and genuine rejection and are resistant to spoofing attempts using photos or masks. Devices with in-display fingerprint sensors (ultrasonic or optical) or 3D face recognition are considered Class 3 Biometric devices.
Identity Check also ensures that a thief cannot change the PIN code without biometric authentication and will not be able to turn off “Find My Device” or theft protection.
Similarly, Google has introduced additional features like theft detection and offline device lock to help users protect personal data in case of theft.
