Apple’s domination in the smartphone market continues, as the iPhone 15 (review) emerges as the highest-selling smartphone of 2024, according to Counterpoint’s latest global handset model sales tracker report published on Monday. The report also highlights that the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the iPhone 15 Pro were the second and third-highest-selling smartphones of last year, respectively.
On top of that, within just a few months, the iPhone 16 Pro Max has emerged as the fifth-best-selling smartphone of 2024, while the fourth and sixth positions are occupied by the Samsung Galaxy A15 5G and the Samsung Galaxy A15 4G, respectively.

Besides Apple, the only other brand to make an impact in the top ten best-selling phones list is Samsung, with the Galaxy S24 Ultra (review) in seventh position. No other smartphone brand has made it into the top ten list.
The iPhone 15, the best-selling smartphone in the world, offered several upgrades over its predecessor, including a more modern display with Dynamic Island, a USB-C port, a 48 MP high-resolution camera, and new colour options. By the end of 2024, the device was also highly discounted, which likely helped Apple sell more iPhone 15 units, despite the device lacking Apple Intelligence support.
While the report does not highlight the number of units sold, it does indicate that trends like smartphones with generational AI capabilities were key differentiators, especially in the high-end segment, where five out of the top ten best-selling smartphones of 2024 offered some form of AI capabilities.
