Measuring 5.1mm, the latest iPad Pro M4 is currently the company’s thinnest product. Apple’s iPhone 17 Air, speculated to launch later next year, was supposed to set a new benchmark in terms of how thin the device would be. However, the Naver Blog has reported that Apple has hit technical roadblocks with components, and that the upcoming iPhone 17 Air might not be as thin as Apple initially wanted it to be.
According to the report, Apple developed a new battery technology featuring a thinner substrate. This would have played a major role in shaving off a couple of millimetres from the iPhone 17 Air’s thickness. Due to technical challenges and cost issues, Apple is said to be reverting to the existing battery technology, preventing Apple from making the device as thin as it desired.
Despite this, the iPhone 17 Air will be slightly thinner than Apple’s thinnest smartphone—the iPhone 6––launched in 2014, which became infamous for its bendgate controversy. The phone is also said to be significantly slimmer than the iPhone 16 series, measuring around 6mm.
The iPhone 17 Air is expected to launch by the end of 2025, and it is also anticipated to be the first non-Pro iPhone to include a 120Hz display. It is also speculated to be powered by a next-generation A19 chip and will come with features like an Action Button, Camera Control, and Apple Intelligence.
Samsung, meanwhile, is also said to be developing an iPhone 17 Air alternative called the Galaxy S25 Slim, speculated to launch in Q2 of 2025, and it is expected to be the thinnest flagship smartphone from Samsung.
