Samsung has been often attributed with popularising foldable smartphones with its Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip series phones, with the company recently announcing the much slimmer Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition.
With the new Korea-exclusive foldable phone, Samsung had to choose between making the device thinner or including stylus support. However, according to a machine-translated report by The Elec, Samsung is ‘”developing a technology that can recognize a stylus (S Pen) without a digitizer with a partner.”
For those wondering, the digitizer is basically a flexible circuit board embedded in the screen that is used to determine the position of the S Pen. To make the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition slimmer than the normal variant, Samsung reduced the thickness of the device by 0.6mm by removing the digitizer.
However, it is still unclear if the company’s upcoming foldable phones, which may be launched sometime in the second half of 2025, will pack the new display technology.
The report by the South Korean media outlet also suggests that Samsung is experimenting with glass back plates for its upcoming folding phones. Compared to current materials used in the hinge, glass emerges as a more lightweight and low-price alternative.
While glass can help reduce the moving parts on the inside of the hinge, there are still concerns about the durability of the material.
The technology still seems to be in its initial stages, with an official from the parts industry saying that “it is difficult to apply mass production next year right now, and we can expect it only in 2026 at the earliest.” Another reason why Samsung may be considering switching to glass back plates is that it wants to reduce its reliance of importing materials such as Titanium from China.
