In a rapidly evolving Indian smartphone market, OPPO is marching forward for continued success in 2025 with a clear focus: democratising AI and delivering premium experiences across the price range. Ahead of the Reno13 series launch, indianexpress.com sat down with Peter Dohyung Lee, head of product strategy at OPPO, to understand the company’s vision for the Indian market in 2025. Read edited excerpts here.
Q: Most smartphone brands limit the AI features to high-end devices. Can we expect full-blown AI features on Reno and even entry-level OPPO phones?
LEE: Our strategy is to democratise AI technology. While flagship products like the Find X8 series offer the full range of AI features, the Reno13 is a de facto flagship in its own right. Users expect a top-tier experience from Reno, so we deliver flagship-level AI features on it. Even mid-range and entry-level phones will feature AI, such as the AI remastering features in Gallery. Our goal is to make the most important and popular AI features accessible across all OPPO phones.
Q: As we move into 2025, what are OPPO India’s key focus areas in the highly competitive Indian smartphone market?
LEE: Having completed 10 years in India in 2024, OPPO is looking forward to its next decade of growth. Our key focus is AI. Since the Reno 12 series, we’ve been introducing AI experiences tailored for the Indian market, like Gallery Remaster and AI productivity tools, and they were well-received. We’re investing heavily in AI and collaborating with top-tier providers like Google and Microsoft to enhance our AI capabilities.
Q: Can you give specific examples of how Reno13 features cater to the Indian market?
LEE: Certainly! Indians travel a lot and want to capture special moments. The Reno 13 caters to this with features like underwater photography, 120x zoom, and Live Photo for capturing 3-second 2K resolution videos.

The AI remastering features in Gallery are also popular, allowing users to enhance photos taken on any device. We’ve also focused on gaming, with a large, immersive display, eye comfort technology, a powerful MediaTek processor, and an aerospace-grade aluminum frame for durability.
India is crucial for our product strategy. Our research shows young Indian users are active smartphone users who love taking photos and videos, sharing them with friends, and embracing digital services. By understanding Indian user demands, we can meet the needs of users globally.
Q: OPPO recently achieved the second position in the Indian smartphone market. What can we expect from OPPO in 2025?
LEE: We aim to maintain and improve our position. We’re confident in India’s growth and are enhancing our portfolio with devices like the Find X8. We will continue to invest in both high-end and entry-level segments, supporting the democratisation of 5G while maintaining the quality OPPO is known for.

Indian consumers are demanding better phones. They are using their phones more actively and are eager to upgrade to more powerful devices. We see a growing demand for high-end and premium phones and the increasing use of EMI plans makes these phones more accessible. It’s clear that the time is right to launch our flagship Find X series in India.
Q: AI is useful, but there are privacy concerns. How is OPPO addressing these concerns?
LEE: We understand these concerns. OPPO is a global company that strictly adheres to industry standards and regulations, including India’s laws on digital privacy and security. We work with trusted partners like Google and Microsoft who share our commitment to privacy. We will continue to comply with all regulations, including any new laws implemented by the Indian government.
