OnePlus recently confirmed that it is moving away from the alert slider in favour of a programmable, iPhone 16-like action button that can do more than just change the device’s sound profile. The company has now announced that the upcoming OnePlus 13T will be the first device to feature this new physical button.
In a Weibo post, the OnePlus CEO shared an image of the OnePlus 13T, showcasing the action button. While it still functions like an alert slider with the ability to change sound profiles, it also offers additional functionalities, which the company will reveal in the coming days.
OnePlus officially teased the 13T on April 1 in an interesting way—by showcasing a parody hammer in a trailer, which ended with a glimpse of the OnePlus 13T box. The 13T is the third device in the OnePlus 13 series and is expected to be a compact smartphone featuring a large battery and the same internals as the OnePlus 13. This includes the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, a high-resolution quad-curved display, an IP69 rating, and more.
This development is likely to influence both OnePlus and OPPO-branded smartphones, with future high-end models from both companies expected to feature programmable physical buttons.
Most smartphones offer at least three physical buttons, including two volume rockers and a power button. The power button on many smartphones is now used for tasks such as accessing virtual assistants like Siri or Gemini.
Back in 2023, Apple introduced the action button on the iPhone 15 Pro (review) series, which was later expanded to the entire iPhone 16 (review) series—alongside a new Camera Control button. Now, more Android brands are adopting similar hardware buttons, at least on their flagship offerings.
