A Sunday Bloomberg report suggests that Apple is trying to recreate the iPhone X moment for its 20th anniversary by introducing an iPhone that looks both cutting-edge and future-ready. Apple is said to be working on a “mostly glass, curved iPhone” with a wraparound display and no visible cutouts for the camera or sensors.
If you feel that the iPhone 15 or 16 is already a mostly glass iPhone, the 20th anniversary edition is expected to look even more futuristic, with a higher screen-to-body ratio. While it might not look as unique as the Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha, it is anticipated to have a futuristic design while retaining the premium look and feel that people expect from Apple.
The design resembles something Apple has been envisioning for years. Patents dating back to 2019 described a continuous glass loop that would give the iPhone a seamless, futuristic look. However, bringing this to life has been difficult due to technological challenges.
Apple’s display suppliers, including Samsung Display and LG Display, have reportedly faced technical roadblocks while trying to make flexible OLED panels that can bend and curve without compromising durability or display quality. Key challenges include the thin film encapsulation and optical adhesive layers required to build such a display, but Apple may have finally solved the material issues needed to enable the next major leap in iPhone design.
While this glass iPhone is likely to be the flagship of Apple’s 2027 lineup, the company is also said to be working on several other ambitious products. These include its first foldable iPhone, camera-equipped AirPods and Apple Watches, a pair of smart glasses to rival Meta’s Ray-Bans, and even a home robot assistant with personality, powered by on-device AI models and an enhanced Siri.
If Apple pulls all of this off, 2027 could be one of the most innovative years in the company’s history. But as always, the success of these products will depend on whether Apple can overcome the significant technical challenges ahead, and how they are priced and received by consumers.
